House letter: there will be a strategy for sustainability in education

As a result of the research 'Learning for sustainable development in primary and secondary education', a room letter was published on October 26, 2023. This letter states that the recommendations from the study will be adopted. This means that the relevant ministries, together with the professional field, will draw up a strategy for sustainability in education.

The study

The content of the room letter relies on the study Learning for sustainable development in primary and secondary education. Main conclusion of the study is that there are (compared to 2015) showed little growth in embedding sustainable development in education. In addition, it was found that there is a great need among schools and teachers for support in the area of learning for sustainable development. Finally, it is concluded that schools struggle with giving substance to sustainable development, and that there is a lack of direction from OCW.

The recommendations

Based on these results and dialogue sessions with experts, the research team makes a number of recommendations. For example, the national government (OCW and professional departments) is advised to take more direction. It is also advised to integrate citizenship and sustainability more strongly. Another important recommendation is to provide better access to good (teaching) materials and support facilities.

The room letter

The room letter largely adopts the study's recommendations. As a follow-up to the study, the minister proposes to work with relevant departments and the field to develop a strategy for sustainability in education for the future. The goal of this strategy is to provide demand-driven support to schools in achieving greater sustainability in education. The strategy will be based on the learning points from the study.
