The LAKS believes that there is still too little focus on sustainability at school. There are many organizations that together offer a broad range of services, but this is so fragmented that currently students receive occasional guest lectures and mainly separate activities are organized. Integrating sustainability into school curricula is therefore the first point of the manifesto, so that students have the necessary competencies to make sustainable choices. The VO Council recognized this urgency: "The VO-raad calls on school administrators and leaders to have the conversation about this in the school with students and staff. The sustainability issue deserves to become a serious part of a school's normal operations. The conversation about this can contribute not only to the realization of more sustainable education, but also to a better understanding of the climate concerns of a substantial portion of scnhol students' population and to increasing mutual understanding between generations."
In recent weeks, in response to the state of education advocated for education where basics such as math, language and citizenship are more prevalent. Emma sees sustainability as an essential part of these basic skills: "Sustainability is of course an important part of this. For example, in citizenship, we are therefore pleased that this also comes back together in the new curriculum. Because as soon as students enter real life after school they have to start making choices about sustainability there, they do need knowledge and awareness for that."
The main purpose of the manifesto is to provide schools with concrete actions on sustainability, both for beginners and leaders. To achieve this, they are calling on scholars to share this manifesto with school leaders and boards. "It's important to seek collaboration at your school. Students can offer a very different perspective, this is ultimately the generation that has to start solving climate issues."
