What reactions do you encounter in the classroom to topics such as environmental problems like climate or decline in biodiversity? How do you deal with this to work toward an attitude of active hope and empowerment.

Environmental issues, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, often evoke strong reactions in the classroom. Students may show concern, fear or indifference. As teachers, we must recognize and deal with these reactions to promote an attitude of active hope and empowerment.

Creating a safe learning environment is the first step. We must be open to students' emotions and opinions and show empathy for their concerns. By listening and taking their perspectives seriously, we build a foundation for further exploration.

In addition to empathy, it is important to inform and provide students with factual knowledge about environmental issues. By sharing scientific information, we help them understand complexity and think critically. We need to highlight hopeful perspectives and positive examples of action so that students feel they can make a difference.
