Greening Process

In cooperation with MBO Curio Urban Green Development and our own student committee GroenGym, we started a greening project. We first looked for possible subsidy pots and based our plan on that. Then we contacted the students of the MBO Curio Urban Green Development course, here in Breda. They were enthusiastic and helped us with the design of a green school site and its construction. In addition, they will support our students in the future with the maintenance of all the greenery. While searching for the various grant opportunities, we came across many interesting, sustainable ideas. For example, we also committed to a Healthy School by installing a water tap outside (from Joint he Pipe) and a panna cage for healthy exercise during breaks. And so we now also have sustainably produced picnic tables from Greenwave (made from fishing nets fished out of the sea) in the schoolyard. We have also actively sought contact with the neighborhood and elementary school through chess tournaments between our students and students from grades 7 and 8, played on outdoor chess tables in the greenery.

The artist of the Blind Wall that was installed last September also took his inspiration from this greening of the grounds, and nature is therefore fully present in the mural. The necessary replacement of the school grounds was also inspired by GroenGym: 1,500 m2 of sidewalk tile was replaced with grass tile, so that rainwater now no longer flows into the sewers, but sinks into the ground.
In summary, the GreenGym project has led to: laying 1500 m2 grass tile, laying 500 m2 'tile out - green in', greening the facades of the school building, construction of a water tap point, construction of an outdoor panna cage for soccer during the break, construction of outdoor chess tables for contact with the neighborhood and elementary school, planting of 4 additional trees (from elsewhere in the city in collaboration with the municipality of Breda and Arkan Zoontjes horticulturist), construction of a roof garden with attention to bees, birds, etc. , construction of a sparrow hotel in collaboration with Breda's city ecologist and enormous awareness among and input from our students, their parents, the neighborhood, staff and various external partners.

The greening process of the Stedelijk Gymnasium Breda ended up in 3rd place at the symposium ' VO voor Morgen' for the best practices of the SustainaBul VO 2022!
