Launch roadmap to sufficient skilled workers for energy transition

Important transitions such as materials transition, climate adaptation and digitalization will impact the construction and installation sector in the coming years or already now. That is why Build Up Skills developed the roadmap 2024-2030. The roadmap provides insight and direction on the actions needed to recruit enough qualified professionals for these transitions.

The European ambition to be climate-neutral by 2050 places great demands on professionals in the construction and installation sector. There must be enough professionals with the right skills to build and renovate energy-neutral buildings. There is work to be done to make this happen. It is estimated that 140,000 to 175,000 professionals with the right knowledge and skills will be needed in the coming years to make the sustainability ambition a reality.

Successful sustainability of the built environment requires more cooperation. Therefore, the roadmap aims to connect involved parties and accelerate cooperation. By working together, the necessary employees with the right skills are available as quickly as possible, so that the sustainability of the built environment becomes a reality at full strength and with the right quality.

Enthusiasm from the market is high, with cooperation being a particularly important issue. For example, Marsha Wagner of Top Sector Energy said, "For the Netherlands, this is a powerful roadmap because it also pays a lot of attention to cooperation between parties and programs." "There is still a lot to do," Judith van Heeswijk of Techniek Nederland believes, "but it is good that with this roadmap the parties are coming together and cooperation is being sought."

Five lines of action

The roadmap outlines five lines of action that will help meet the challenge of working together to ensure that there are enough qualified employees in the coming years.

These lines are:

  • Labor market - gap between supply and demand and improving the match
  • Teaching and education better connected
  • Improve collaborations
  • Encouraging and commissioning innovation
  • Increase inclusion and improve industry image

Widely worn

The roadmap was created in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders and funded by the European Union. Stakeholder organizations have been involved through interviews, workshops and co-creation events. As a result, the solution directions from the roadmap are supported by the sector. This is reflected in the many expressions of support from industry organizations.
