Albeda and Coöperatie Leren voor Morgen are organizing a collegial directors' meeting on sustainability in mbo. This meeting is especially for executives such as program directors, education directors, location directors, directors of staff services and team managers.
What are we talking about?
In education, in a course, in the curriculum, what do you do about sustainability? How do you give that a place. In your team and with colleagues, but also how do you move students? During the consultation we learn from each other's experiences, inspire and support each other.
Special guest: Jeffrey Vogel
This time we talk to Jeffrey Vogel, education leader of the Fashion department at Albeda ánd appointed the first Sustainable School Leader in 2024
GenZ: In the Grips of Uncertainty and the Role of Education
GenZ is growing up in a world where the urgency of sustainability can no longer be ignored. For many, there is a sense of unease and uncertainty: "We're in trouble, what should we do now?" These feelings are often accompanied by anxiety and sometimes even hopelessness. Social media amplifies these emotions; the constant flow of information can be overwhelming and increase feelings of powerlessness.
Education plays a crucial role in this. It is not only the place where knowledge is transferred, but also where perspective is offered and where students learn to determine their influence. This requires us as education professionals to think about how we design our education and how we prepare students for a field of work that is often still focused on consumption, where sustainability is not always central. This makes it extra challenging to inspire and motivate students for a future where sustainable choices are taken for granted.
The dilemma
Education can and should play a leading role in the transition to a more sustainable world. But this is not without dilemmas. As an educational institution, do we dare to take risks by making sustainability more central? What are the consequences of this for the appeal of our education and financial stability? And do we dare to show true entrepreneurship in our education policy?
Jeffrey believes that education is the place to bring about change. He advocates a radical approach, but also sees the obstacles: the fear of losing students, the financial risks, and the question of how far you can go without losing your own support. As an educational leader, how do you navigate among these challenges? When do you reach a tipping point, and what can you afford in the quest for innovation?
During the meeting, interesting for educational leaders from all sectors, Jeffrey will share his insights. Together we will discuss the questions raised by these challenges: How do you act as an education leader in this complex reality? How do we engage GenZ students in a world not yet fully convinced of the importance of sustainability? And how do we ensure that education is not only a mirror of society, but also an engine for change?
